the little field of the curses?
mallach — malairt foirme de mallachtTá an cáilitheoir éiginnte. Thabharfadh na foirmeacha neamhspleácha 1666 ‘Gurtinemallagh’ agus 1712 ‘Gorteenmala’ le fios go bhfuil na leaganacha ar léarscáileanna an 17ú haois iontaofa, m.sh. 1655 ‘Gurtinamalagh’. Ba dheacair an fhorbairt fuaime ó mallach go 1838 ‘-meale’ a mhíniú go sásúil, áfach. D’fhéadfadh sé gur maolach, gin. iol. < maoil “bare hill” a bhí ann ó cheart agus gur iarrachtaí iad 1655 ‘-malagh’, 1666 ‘-mallagh’ agus 1838 ‘-meale’ araon ar fhoghar cosúil le /mœːl/ a chur in úil.
