Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the bare town?
Ní gá go gcuireann -yle na bhfoirmeacha luatha béarlaithe -l caol deiridh na Gaeilge in iúl: féach an litriú ‘Donogh Moyle’ < Donncha Maol “bald Donncha” in ionchoisne dar dáta 1606, i gcló in LS Uí Dhuinn 15. Cf. bf Doire Maol (#28854) i gCill Uisean agus bf An Ráth Mhaol (#27747) i Mainistir Laoise. Níl aon chnoc sa bhaile fearainn (cf. DIL s.v. 2 mael) agus dá bharr sin is é is dóigh linn ná gurb é an aidiacht maol atá anseo (ibid. s.v. 1 mael).
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Ní léir cé acu an fíor-alias atá in 1622 ‘Balleshane’, 1669 ‘Ballyshane’ nó botún.
