    town of —

Ní léir brí an cháilitheora anseo. Cf. bf Cnocán an Phobóil (#48845) i dTiobraid Árann ach féach freisin bf Baile Phobuail (#39081) i gContae na Mí. Cf. leis Ó Duinnín agus www.dil.ie s.v. pobual, ainm luibhe.

Féach an t-ainm Béarla in 1666 ‘[Ballypoble alias] Cardustowne’ ASE 84. Tá roinnt leathaistriúcháin agus ainmneacha Béarla nuachumtha san fhoinse céanna, cuid acu níos buaine ná a chéile.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:

    1. Is cosúil gurb ionann 1575 ‘Tune’ sa chur síos ar mhainéar Lé (JKAS IV 339) agus 1838 ‘a sub-denomination called ‘Tuim’’ AL, 1841 Thumb Wood SO in oirthear an bhaile fearainn seo < An Tom (??) “the bush”.
    2. Is iad muintir Adaire a chum an t-ainm Rathdaire Demesne SO, bunaithe ar a sloinne féin (féach litir ó Cornelia Adaire san Ainmleabhar Athbhreithnithe i 1907: ‘About thirty years ago my husband and I again changed the name of the place from Belgrove to Rathdaire’). Cf. Rathdaire House SO, Rathdaire Lake SO.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:

    1. 1549 ‘Barnatobban’ CarrMS, 1570 ‘Boretoban’ F, 1617 ‘Ballepobke & Boretoban’, ‘Bohertobban’ Inq. Lag., 1618 ‘Baratoban’ CPR 390, 1666 ‘Barretoben’ ASE 84, 1695 ‘Ballyntobber’ Inq. Lag. < Bóthar an Tobáin (?) “the road of the stout person, tub” nó Bóthar Tobáin “the road of Tobán” (cf. Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV s.n. Curratubbin ). Níl aon talamh ard anseo agus is féidir barr “top(land)” a chur as an áireamh dá bharr; díol spéise mar sin cailliúint -th- /h/ láir tar éis guta fada in bóthar > ‘Bore-’, ‘Barre-’. Cf. bf An Caisleán Breac (#28344) i dTigh na hInse.
