Bally Mac Elligot signifies the Town of Mac Elligot,
Bally Mac Elligot signifies the Town of Mac Elligot, who was the ancient proprietor. The anonymous writer of a tract on the Co. of Kerry preserved in the MS. Library of Trinity College Dublin I. 1, 3, speaks of this family as follows: “Bally Mac Elligot distant to the East from Tralee about three miles has in it the ruins of some considerable castles, but it is chiefly remarkable for it’s name, which it takes from the Mac Elligots, a potent family in these parts descended from the Mac Clowds of the Isle of Skith in Scotland. They came into Ireland with Galfridus de Marisco, Justice of Ireland, and had formerly great possessions in this country.” The site of the Old Church of this Parish is occupied by a Protestant one which was built in the year 1824.
