- Gaeilge
‘the town(land) of Iosód’
Iosód – leagan Gaeilge de ainm pearsanta Angla-Normannach (Iseut, Isaut na Sean-Fhraincise). Cf. Séipéal Iosóid/Chapelizod (57123) i mBaile Átha Cliath. Baineadh ciall eile as an chéad mhír le himeacht ama, thosaigh an fhorbairt go Isaac i lár an 17ú haois de réir dealraimh, féach 1657c Issott's towne al' Isaack's towne (Inq. T.I. 2). Ní léir, áfach, gur tharla an fhorbairt chéanna sa Ghaeilge riamh. Mar sin, moltar Baile Iosóid mar leagan Gaeilge de. - English
‘the town(land) of Iosód’
Iosód – an Irish form of an Anglo-Norman personal name (Old French Iseut, Isaut). Cf. Séipéal Iosóid/Chapelizod (57123) in Dublin.
Over time the first element was reinterpreted, it appears that the development to Isaac began in the middle of the 17th Century, see 1657c Issott's towne al' Isaack's towne (Inq. T.I. 2). It is not clear, however, that the same development ever occurred in Irish. Therefore, Baile Iosóid is suggested as the Irish form.
