Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the ring-fort of Cofach
Cofach (< Cobhthach) — ainm pearsantaIs cosúil gur caighdeánú is cúis leis an litriú ‘-coffie’ faoi lár an 17ú haois agus as sin anuas. Tá sé le tuiscint as na foirmeacha luatha ar nós 1593 ‘Rachohie’, 1607 ‘Rathcomagh’ [leg. Rathcowagh], ‘Rathcowaghe’, ‘Racowgh’, 1612 ‘Racohie’ nach bhfuaimnítí an carn seo -bhth- mar /f/ san ainm seo. (Cf. logainmneacha béarlaithe inar tháinig -duff < dubh “black” sa treis, fiú amháin i gceantair nach bhfuaimnítí an consan deiridh sin sa Ghaeilge leis na cianta.)
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Ní foláir nó is é an t-imfhálú darb ainm anois Raheen Fort SO < An Ráithín “the little ring-fort” an ráth as ar ainmníodh an baile fearainn. Tá sé suite ar chnocán ar a dtugtar Clara Hill SO 6″. Is éard atá ansin ná ainm an bhaile fearainn teorantaigh bf Clárchoill/Clarahill (#28674) “level wood” — le himeacht aimsire glacadh leis an leagan béarlaithe de mar a bheadh ainm cnoic. (Cf. Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV (LG) s.v. Tarahill.)
