In the case of Figart/ Fiogart in the parish of Raphoe, the name seems to be a compound of fíodh (fid “a tree”, “wood, timber”, “ trees (coll.), a wood or grove:”, DIL) and gort “a field” (DIL): Fiodhghort > Fiogort > Fiogart. In the case of this townland in the parish of Clonmany/Cluain Maine, however, the historical forms of the name are not consistent with fiodh but rather with feadh. It is not clear whether feadh here is a variant form of fiodh (FGB) or if it is ‘feagh’ (feadh) the word that some of the last generation of native Irish speakers in this parish had for “a rush” (see Evans, E.
