[Kilmacshalgan]
"Parish of Kilmacshalgan so called & written in all late documents. It was formerly written Kilmuckshalgaun, and is still known by the peasantry in the Irish language by Prashanontha. It is said to have derived its name from the old church in Duneal townland which according to tradition was a chapel belonging to a friary founded in the 13th century by a person named Mughshalgan and so continued until the friars were expelled by Cromwell" [Desc. Rem.];
