"Pinkman: Carraig-dhúin = Rock of the fort. This name is a puzzle, and O’Donovan has some very confusing remarks on the name. The Down Survey gives ‘Carrickgowen’ and a Royal Commission Report of 1821-1825 has Carrickdonane, alias Carrickgawen. Now, according to the Ordnance Field names, it was often written and pronounced Carrickdown, and, as a matter of fact, the common local pronunciation today is Carrickdown. I mentioned Carrickgooan to some residents; they said they never heard the name; others assured me that they remembered to hear the old people use that form. Can this be a case of the interchange of the letters ‘d’ and ‘g’ in the anglicizing process? (Compare Joyce, Place-names, Vol. I, pages 56-7). And that the true Irish form is Carraig-dhúin. See Dinneen, dún. There are traces of a fort in the townland. "
