Dr.O’Donovan takes the latter part of this name to be a man’s name – Gaethar or Geeher, and he must have been guided by some local authority, when he decided to do so. At the same time I am not so sure that this is correct. I have a half suspicion that the letter ‘R’ in this name may be a local corruption and that the name should read Béal-Átha Gaoithe, ford mouth of the wind. This is an exposed place. Cloonageeher in the Co. Longford - a mile or so from this place, O’Donovan makes Geeher’s lawn or meadow, though this name was very oftern written Cloonageeha or Cloonageha. Cornageeha in the parish of Mohill is written on the Down Survey ‘Cornaguher’ though the Irish form is undoubtedly, Cor-na-Gaoithe, hill of the wind. Likewise Cornageeha in Gortletteragh Parish has been written Cornageeher, and I have heard it so pronounced locally, though here again there is no doubt about the true Irish ofrm.
