the little church
Mhol an Coiste Logainmneacha An Choill Bheag “the little wood” mar leagan Gaeilge d’ainm an bhaile fearainn seo i 2016. D’athraigh an Coiste an moladh sin go An Chill Bheag “the little church” ag mí Dheireadh Fómhair 2026.
Moladh An Choill Bheag “the little wood” mar leagan oifigiúil Gaeilge de Killabeg i bhfianaise ‘Killebegg als. Littlewood’ (CPR, lch. 531) agus a leithéid. Tá sé tagtha chun solais, áfach, go raibh ‘Killebegg alias Littlewood’ agus na haonaid talún eile i gCo. Loch Garman a bronnadh ar Edward Southworthe ar fad suite taobh thall den tSláine ó Killabeg, roinnt acu go díreach os a chomhair. Dá bharr, glacann an Coiste Logainmneacha leis anois gur áit eile ar fad, gar do Killabeg, a bhí faoi chaibidil le ‘Killebegg als. Littlewood’ (CPR, lch. 531), agus na litriúcháin eile atá marcáilte “Ní hionann” sa tábla fianaise anseo (bl. 1612, 1612, 1621). Níl an logainm eile úd in úsáid inniu. Ar athbhreithniú na fianaise, tá an Coiste Logainmneacha den tuairim gurbh é An Chill Bheag, an logainm Gaeilge a thug Killabeg dúinn sa Bhéarla, agus é ag tagairt don suíomh eaglasta atá suite sa bhaile fearainn seo. (Féach HeritageDataMaps WX020-012002; féach freisin Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV: Townland Names of Co. Wexford / Ainmneacha na mBailte Fearainn, Co. Loch Garman, lch. 1104).
- English
the little church
An Coiste Logainmneacha / The Placenames Committee recommended An Choill Bheag “the little wood” as the official Irish name of Killabeg in 2016. The Committee changed that recommendation to An Chill Bheag “the little church” in October 2026.
An Choill Bheag “the little wood” was recommended as the official Irish form on the basis of evidence such as ‘Killebegg als. Littlewood’ (CPR, p. 531) and variants thereof. It has come to light, however, that ‘Killebegg alias Littlewood’ and further lands in Co. Wexford granted to Edward Southworthe were all situated on the other side of the River Slaney from Killabeg, some directly opposite. As a result, An Coiste Logainmneacha / The Placenames Committee now considers ‘Killebegg als. Littlewood’ (CPR, p. 531) and variants thereof, marked ‘ní hionann / not the same location’, to refer to a completely different site near Killabeg. This other placename is now defunct. On reconsidering the evidence An Coiste Logainmneacha / The Placenames Committee is of the opinion that it is An Chill Bheag “the little church” that lies behind anglicized Killabeg in this instance, and it refers to the ecclesiastical site situated in this townland (see HeritageDataMaps WX020-012002; see also Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV: Townland Names of Co. Wexford, p. 1104).
