This name is derived from the old parish church of Rosslare, which is located in this townland (see AIW 1215). The Irish form of the name is a translation.

[There is no evidence that this place-name is from Old Norse ‘Kirkja-stoum’, explained as meaning ‘Churchtown or Churchfarm’, as recently suggested ([details to be added]). Churchtown could have been coined at any point after the arrival of the Anglo-Normans in Ireland and therefore the name cannot be used as a potential marker of Norse settlement here. In the absence of any unambiguous evidence to indicate earlier derivation such an approach would be methodologically unsound. Indeed, one need look no further than Churchtown in the parish of Liskinfere (#53065) in north Wexford (Townland Names of Co. Wexford p.642) to find an example of the same name that was doubtless coined in the post-1600 period.]
