Historical examples of this anglicised place-name such as ‘Clogcolita’ (1), ‘Cloghculleta’ (2; see also 5), and ‘Cloholotha’ (3) reflect derivation from Cloch Chodlata “the stone of the sleep”, rather than ‘Cloch Ulltach’ as suggested by O’Donovan (7). The final -ch in Cloch Chodlatach, as proposed in BPP (p.41), is not supported by the evidence: the final gh in ‘Cloghulatagh’ is unattested until the nineteenth century and can be readily ascribed to the common tendency to add -gh where no guttural was present in the precursor (see Ballintlea, par. Kilnahue). The name Cloch Chodlata “the stone of the sleep” probably originally refers to ʻthe Saintʼs bed, a sloping piece of bedrock’ (see AIW 1400) located just over the townland border in Mulmontry (par. Taghmon). Place-names with a similar theme, namely Knockacullata/Cnoc an Chodlata “the hill of the sleep” and Coolcullitha/An Chúil Chodlatach “the sleepy corner”, are located in Cork (see logainm.ie).
