"Pinkman: Oileán-na-crannóige = Island of the ‘Crannog’ or wooden house. This is the name of an island in Lough Mac Nean. It belongs to Meenagh townland… Crannóg means, primarily, a piece of wood (crann), a structure of wood, and, by extension, a lake dwelling – a wooden house erected on artificial islands in lakes. Natural islands were used in some instances but, commonly, these islands were artificial. They were made in shallow waters by driving poles or stakes into the bottom. These stakes were used to support cross-beams, over which trees, bushes, brambles and sods were heaped in sufficient quantities to raise the structure well over the water. On this structure wooden houses for the family, or families in some cases, were built. The surrounding lake gave adequate protection from hostile parties, while communication with the mainland was made by means of a small boat – very often hollowed out from one tree-trunk.
