Rinne an scoláire Paul Walsh cur síos ar an logainm seo (Leaves of History, lch.70): ‘The designation is not derived from Edward Moore of Mellifont, or his descendants, in whose possession the temporalities of the church were after the year 1579. It is centuries older than the advent of these Moores to Ireland… The earliest reference to the parish known is that found in the Papal Taxation of 1302: ‘church de Mora…’ The form of this entry shows that Mora is a local, not a personal name. Again we have ‘Robert Saresfeld of Mora’ at date 1357 in the Gormanstown Register … The name appears as a local designation also in Scotland, and in England, as in the following: ‘canonry and prebend of Mora, in the church of London, value 12 marks’… The word is an early form of the English word moor Latinised.’
