In early Irish-language texts the name is usually spelt Cunga, without any qualifier. Historical examples of the longer form of the name, Cunga Feichín are confined to the Annals of the 12th and 13th centuries. There are many more examples of the name in Irish both earlier and later than this where the name is almost invariably written Cunga or Conga. Cunga Feichín was recommended as the Irish name of Cong postal-town in the early 20th century in conjunction with the Irish language revival movement. At that time, there was a tendency to recommend the use of long forms of placenames in Irish wherever possible, even if this meant resuscitating names that had long since become obsolete. Conga is the recommended spelling in Ó Dónaill’s Irish-English Dictionary.
